Even very young children vehemently announce that they want to do things themselves. Why not take them at their word? It only takes a few more minutes if we encourage our children to dress themselves. Try saying, ‘You can start it off, I’ll do the rest.’ It’s worth giving them the chance to prove themselves, because if they are prevented from following their impulses they will soon lose the will to try.

Give children the joy of helping when you’re sweeping up, drying dishes, or loading and unloading the washing machine. Give them encouraging smiles and nods. This enhances their sense of importance, and children of all ages need to feel valued.
